Spray foam insulation is an air barrier that prevents heat from escaping a home or building in the winter and stopping cool air from entering in the summer. This allows homeowners and building owners to save money on energy bills and reduce repair costs.
Spray Foam Insulation: Cost vs. Savings
To make spray foam insulation, contractors have to mix two liquid chemicals on site. These liquids are then sprayed onto the walls, attic and other areas of a home or building. The foam expands to fill all nooks and crannies of the structure creating an airtight seal and reducing drafts. Spray foam insulation is available in a variety of R-values, depending on how much resistance it offers to heat flow and temperature changes.
Unfortunately, the blowing agents used to create spray foam insulation have a high global warming potential (GWP). This means that each kilogram of HFCs released into the atmosphere is 3,400 times more potent at speeding up climate change than carbon dioxide on a per kilo basis. Fortunately, there are now blowing agent options that are low in GWP, free of CFCs and HCFCs, and based on natural substances such as methyl methane.
Once cured, spray foam insulation is non toxic and safe to touch. However, while it is curing the insulation emits a gas that causes irritability to eyes and lungs. It is important to wear a face mask and protective clothing while installing spray foam insulation. Over time, repeated exposure to isocyanates can cause a chemical sensitization and result in respiratory irritation and/or a chronic condition known as chemical bronchitis.
